Trafficking in persons is one of many ways that 40 million people across the globe experience modern slavery including an estimated 15,000 people in Australia (Global Slavery Index 2018).

Collectively, Catholic agencies procure billions of dollars of goods and services at high-risk of being made or provided by people in forced labour, debt bondage or servitude - all forms of modern slavery.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney is committed to taking action to eliminate all forms of modern slavery by:

  • demonstrating leadership to comply with the Modern Slavery Act 2018

  • conducting due diligence on our operational and supply chain risks to people

  • engaging our suppliers, business partners and other stakeholders

  • training and equipping our staff to embed responsible sourcing practices in procurement processes

  • implementing an ethical investment policy

  • educating students about root causes, contributing factors and actions they can take

  • raising awareness of modern slavery with parents, the broader community and other stakeholders

  • advocating for policy reform locally and nationally, and

  • providing or cooperating in remedy to people impacted by modern slavery

  • coordinating the Australian Catholic Anti-slavery Network (ACAN)
