There is an ever growing amount of decent corporate accountability resources available online. Below is a selection of the resources we believe could be useful for those interested in corporate accountability in Australia.
Corporate Accountability News Sources
Aside from our ACAN webpage that brings together all of the recent Australian corporate accountability news into one place, there is the world leader in business and human rights information – the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre. They have up to date news, as well as an enourmous collection of backdated information and resources. You can take a look through it all here. You can also sign up to their updates here too.
Australian Corporate Accountability Policy Papers, Briefs and Submissions
ACAN put together a short Policy Paper in preparation for Australia’s session before the UN Universal Periodic Review in 2011. ACAN can send you a copy of it by emailing secretariat@acan.org.au
Allens Arthur Robinson has put together some of the most useful resources in this area as submissions to John Ruggie’s team, when he was UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on Business and Human Rights. You can view their 2008 submission related to ‘Corporate Duty and Human Rights Under Australian Law’ here.
Human Rights Law Centre Policy Paper (2010) has some excellent recommendations regarding the potential for improving corporate accountability in Australia. See it here. The Human Rights Law Centre also made a useful submission to John Ruggie in lead up to the passage of the Guiding Principles at the 17th Session of the UN Human Rights Council. You can view it here.
Resources for Corporate Accountability Activists & Advocates
There is no point reinventing the wheel and the ‘Business & Human Rights Documentation Project’ is now the single biggest resource for corporate accountability activists and advocates. The ‘Be Heard’ project, as it is commonly known, is a joint project of ESCR Net and the Center for Human Rights & Global Justice of New York University that began in 2011. Take a look through their catalogue of resources for activists and advocates here.
Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) Guides, Sites and Other Resources
The Danish Institute for Human Rights has a ‘Human Rights & Business Project’. They have many HRIA resources available for paying customers. However, some of their materials and resources publicly available. Take a look through their website and resources here.
